PLAN NOW FOR A LOCAL GOVERNMENT AWARENESS DAY!

When? Pick any day that best fits your schedule!

What Can You Do? Invite a local government official into your class as a speaker-visit city hall-research the history of your city-hold a discussion on sales tax revenues--brainstorm an issue facing your school, city, state, or country--hold a debate on that issue and develop an action plan to solve that issue.

Why? To introduce students to the important role local government plays in their community

Partners: University of MO-St. Louis-College of Education, University of MO-Extension, Missouri Municipal League (MML), Missouri City/County Management Association (MCMA), Missouri Bar, & St. Louis Area City Management Association (SLACMA)  
  


Program Name

MY LOGO is the new name for the Local Government Program(formerly Local Government CECH-UP). The name stands for "Missouri Youth Engaged in Local Government."

Program Director

Sandy Diamond, M.Ed., is the the MY LOGO Program Director.  She also serves as Director for Kids Voting Missouri. Both programs are part of the Citizenship Education Clearing House at the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Education.

Prior to joining UMSL in 1999, Sandy was the Newspapers in Education (NIE) Coordinator for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and also taught government/civics for the Hazelwood School District.

Welcome to the MY LOGO Teacher Section!
(Missouri Youth Engaged in Government Program--formerly
Local Government CECH-UP) 

A Teacher Involved in MY LOGO might:

  1. Sign up for a workshop on local government and learn how to integrate the Local Government Activities Handbook into his/her existing curriculum material.

  2. Attend meetings to plan and carry out the program in their school or district.

  3. Implement the program in their classrooms through the use of the handbook and other resources, and facilitate the development of student projects.

  4. Assist students in taking the online pre/post tests.

  5. Participate in the planning and implementation of SITE VISITS to City Hall, Historic Buildings, Police Departments, Courthouses.

  6. Take part in a regional or local PROJECTS FAIR where students "showcase" their research & solution of a local government problem or issue.

  7. Invite local government officials such as: the City or County Manager, Mayor, Councilman/Woman, Alderman/Woman, Police Chief, Sheriff, Commissioner, local Judge, County Clerk, into the classroom to tell students what they do and why it's important.

  8. Promote and publicize the program among other teachers and schools, local government officials, Extension personnel, and community organizations.
